Presentation Title: Potential of membrane engineering in the field of hydrogen generation and purification: strategies to meet the targets of the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance in the framework of the European Green Deal

Abstract

Hydrogen age started on 2020 when Coronavirus pandemic took place, but still most of the industrial hydrogen manufacture comes at present from steam reforming of natural gas, responsible for massive emissions of CO2 and further harmful compounds in the environment. The European Green Deal is promoting measures to limit the environmental impact of future hydrogen energy processes, and among others the exploitation of biogas as an option over natural gas could favor the energy transition from a carbon-based to the hydrogen economy. In this work, the potential of membrane engineering applied to hydrogen generation and purification is presented, particularly focusing on the different strategies based on membranes application to meet the stringent targets promoted by the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance, under the Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda 2021-2027. In particular, the most relevant results related to the application of Pd-based membranes and membrane reactors used to generate decarbonized hydrogen from biogas reforming are presented, according to the objectives of some ongoing Next Generation EU and Italian scientific projects supporting the research initiatives developed in the framework of the European Green Deal.
